This study examines the legal framework for the protection of archaeological sites in Algerian legislation, with a focus on their significance as key components of national heritage and identity. A notable example is the Tassili n'Ajjer Djanet region in the southern part of Algeria , recognized as one of the largest open-air museums in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site, symbolizing the rich historical and cultural heritage of the country. The research concentrates on analyzing relevant national laws, particularly Law No. 98-04 on the protection of cultural heritage, assessing their effectiveness in addressing contemporary challenges such as uncontrolled urban expansion, theft, vandalism, and environmental changes. Utilizing a legal analytical approach, the study explores the obstacles to the effective implementation of these laws and highlights gaps in coordination among responsible institutions. It also compares Algerian legislation with international standards, including UNESCO conventions, to evaluate its alignment with global requirements for safeguarding cultural heritage. The findings reveal a need to enhance the legal and administrative systems, proposing more efficient mechanisms for coordination between governmental bodies and civil society, as well as improved public awareness of the importance of archaeological sites. The study offers several recommendations for updating national legislation to ensure the long-term protection of cultural heritage, particularly in significant regions like Tassili n'Ajjer and the nearby Gantt areaحماية المعالم الأثرية في التشريع الجزائريOther
